Student Spotlight: Isabella

Isabella explains how leading presentations and energy-saving campaigns has strengthened her confidence and shaped her interest in environmental policy.
Isabella describes herself as ambitious and happiest when she is involved in something useful. She enjoys time with family and friends, being outdoors, hiking, and volunteering at a nearby animal sanctuary. As she enters her senior year, she is reflecting on what she has contributed to her communities and looking for experiences that will prepare her for the future.
She first joined the program because she wanted meaningful summer work when few employers were willing to hire someone at that stage of school. SEM offered something different from the options she saw around her. What began as a practical search for a job became a place to learn professional communication, build confidence, and contribute to projects with visible community value.
Isabella’s role centers on marketing and communications. She participates in client meetings, often leads or coordinates presentations, and helps shape campaigns that turn energy-management ideas into actions people can understand. That work requires more than polished materials. She has to understand the subject, read the room, coordinate with teammates, and make technical information feel relevant to the audience.
Two campaigns show the range of that responsibility. The Power Down Playoffs encourage commercial buildings to reduce unnecessary energy use during federal holidays when the spaces would not be occupied. Isabella also led a staff power-down campaign that supported her district’s high school as it worked toward Clean Buildings compliance. She coordinated materials and helped make sure the people responsible for each building received what they needed.
Public speaking was initially one of her hardest tasks. Explaining energy and sustainability to a large group can feel daunting, especially when the audience is new to the topic. Repetition changed that. “The biggest piece of advice is to continue doing it,” she said. Presenting regularly helped her find a more conversational style, learn what makes her feel prepared, and become more comfortable speaking in front of others.
Team preparation is part of that confidence. Before a presentation, Isabella values practicing with the people who will be beside her. Seeing teammates become comfortable helps everyone settle in, and shared preparation makes it easier to recover when a presentation does not follow the script. The same idea shapes her advice about taking on new commitments: find people who share the goal and can provide encouragement and accountability.
In the future, Isabella hopes to study law and focus on environmental policy. She can already see a connection between that goal and her SEM work, where public requirements, sustainability, communication, and practical implementation meet. Her experience gives prospective partners a clear example of workforce development in action: a student is not only learning about policy, but also helping people respond to it.
